FARM GATES

by Kate Edwards

One of the joys of a trip to the country is visiting local farm-gates to buy fresh produce direct from the growers.

It’s a uniquely rural experience that connects customers with the source of their food and produce and there are so many benefits!

I’ve always loved to wander down dirt roads and winding lanes in search of home-grown fruit and vegetables, freshly picked flowers and the occasional jar of home-made jam. Freshness and flavour of course, but also the opportunity to engage with farmers, to learn how they’ve grown their produce and hear their stories of life on the land.

Maldon and surrounds offer several enticing farm-gate experiences. Next time you visit, why not plan to venture just a little further out of town to explore them for yourself? I’ve put together some suggestions to get you started. Enjoy!

Maldon Cherry Farm

A cherry orchard located at 96 Watersons Rd, Tarrengower on the edge of the Maldon township. Maldon Cherry Farm offers over ten varieties of organically grown cherries. Cherries are in season from November to December. Do check their Facebook for updated time and dates for their farm gate opening. Well worth a visit for cherry lovers!

Winter Creek Flowers

Lastly, there’s our own farm-gate. Our little farm is located on the outskirts of Maldon, just a couple of minutes’ drive or a relaxed 15-minute walk from the centre of town. Our farm-gate stall is open one weekend each season. We offer sustainably grown cut-flowers, fresh and dried lavender and seasonal farm produce including fruit and farm-foraged flora and foliage. If you’d like to drop by then please visit our website for upcoming dates and directions.
